SPEAR: a Student-Initiated Retention Project
Originally called PAPER (Pilipino American Project for Education and Retention), Samahang Pilipino Education and Retention (SPEAR) was formed in 1988 as one of the first three CRC (Campus Retention Committee) retention projects in reaction to UCLA’s removal of Pilipinxs from Affirmative Action, the anticipated drop of Pilipinx admission rates, and discontent with UCLA's ability to address our retention needs. SPEAR uses a holistic approach that identifies Pilipinx identity, community, and the cultural standards of success as factors in Pilipinx retention rates. Thus, SPEAR emphasizes the need for “bayanihan” where students support other students in redefining our education and succeeding at the university level. SPEAR offers support through mentorship, internship, counseling, and all-SRC services. SPEAR is an entity of Samahang Pilipino.
